And if you don’t believe it really is him, he was filmed making the cover of this magazine, so you can see Banksy at work on the internet: a first. CCTV cameras are one of his obsessions at the moment; they are, he says, one of the worst things about modern Britain.
“The amount of security cameras gets on my nerves. Obviously from a professional point of view, but also on a more philosophical level. I don’t understand why Britain has embraced cameras more than anywhere else — is it because we’re desperate to feel we still matter and we quite enjoy the idea someone is always watching us? I hate it when they say, ‘If you’ve done nothing wrong then you’ve got nothing to hide.’ Everyone’s got something to hide, otherwise there’s something really wrong with them.”

CCTV in Leeds

Leeds Initiative
The objectives of the Leedswatch scheme are:
To reduce the ‘fear of crime’ and offer ‘ reassurance’ to the public, by:(1) Facilitating the apprehension and prosecution of offenders.
(2) Assisting in the prevention and detection of crime committed in public areas.
To achieve the above objectives, the main function and responsibilities of the CCTV operators are to:
(a) Work a shift pattern that provides the monitoring of Leedswatch CCTV on a 24 hour basis.
(b) Respond to incidents and report to the police & other agencies when necessary.
(c) Provide statements for Court purposes.
(d) Act as professional witnesses.
(e) Keep accurate records of incidents.


The cost of running the CCTV service is around 1.5 million annually

A CCTV operator has received a national award for helping to save a woman’s life after she collapsed in January’s heavy snow.

Street marshals are employed by the clubs and bars in the city centre to keep the area safe outside their own premises.

They deal with rowdy behaviour as it arises by:


  • warning troublemakers about their behaviour
  • liaising with other clubs to ban entry for specific people
  • getting city centre CCTV cameras trained on troublesome groups or individuals
  • contacting the police when necessary
I dont think leeds city centre is as bad as it was 10 or 20 years this is mainly down to the diverse nightlife and choice of venue
But it could be better a lot better and the major factor in that is policing and by this i dont mean the plague of cctv which is great at filming crime but does little to prevent it. Walking the beat seems to be a thing of the past and should be more of a priority its become like a lost art. leedsleader said at 2010-10-27 15:14:51

'CCTV is an emotive issue; however the public of Leeds, on the whole, are
supportive of the Council’s use of this technology to reduce crime and the fear
of crime. The cameras have a proven track record as a key strategy in crime
prevention and detection and allaying the fear of crime.'

The average cost for the installation of a single CCTV camera system costs in
the region of £22,500 (Capital) and on average continuous annual revenue
costs are £4,500 per year. Annual revenue costs cover the cost of the BT line
rental, electrics, monitoring and maintenance of the system, but do not include
any insurance for damage to the system e.g. motor vehicle collision or
vandalism.

1.       Leeds City Council need to save £150million over the next four years
2.       In 2001 Leeds had a population of 715,600. The revised population estimates for mid-2008 show that the population has increased to 779,300, an increase of 8.9% from the 2001 figure.

1.       Trinity Leeds is a £350million shopping & leisure destination in Leeds City Centre due to open in spring  2013. Trinity Leeds will feature 120 units for major UK and international retailers, including many brands new to Leeds. It’s estimated it will bring a £10million rejuvenation of Albion Street. An estimated 3,000 people will be employed in retail related positions.

2.       Leeds is ranked 23rd ‘best European cities to locate a business’ in the European Cities Monitor.     The audacity with public money is breathtaking. Local funding for schools and sports facilities shelved; redundancies looming for public sector workers; key services cut back while we have to watch our local politicians donning hard hats and “bigging-up” this nonsense monster. They were probably blowing “investment” fanfares for the now demolished Metro University building when that was built. Just like they were blowing their vuvuzelas when Leeds United were going to morph into a world class football team with a new stadium to boot.

    If David Cameron wants “A Big Society” and a greater say for people on local issues, then the thousand opinions cited as "public consultation" for this arena is disingenuous.   9. Of course it will be a major economic player. It has to be.  It will have to suck up hundreds of thousands of pounds every week in ticket sales.  It will have to be branded and hyped.  My vote would be for ‘The Marks and Spencer’ Arena to reflect Leeds noble retail heritage.  Hundreds of thousands of pounds that, yes, will pay wage bills, will pay for a supply chain and will provide a return to investors and managers.  It will be fascinating to see how much of the cash hoovered up by the Arena will actually be retained in the city.  My guess is that much of it will leave the Leeds economy.  http://leedscd.wordpress.com/2010/08/12/leeds-arena-winners-and-losers/

I am not against the Arena.  But neither am I for it.  What I am against is the continuing massive investment in the built infrastructure in the city that seems to imply if we can just get the right buildings in the right place we will get progress in our very wonderful city.  We won’t. If I were in the council or a development agency I would still be arguing to develop Leeds as a producer of culture and wealth rather than as a consumer of it.

  12. Leeds’ music scene seems to have flourished without an arena – Live at Leeds, the Leeds Festival, Party in the Park and numerous gigs in between. Perhaps the Arena will do well as a sports, performance venue, but it seems to have little support from the music sector.
    Personally, I hope they’ve planned some useful conferencing facilities…Leeds lacks a great city-centre venue for 500-1000 delegate conferences.

What is Graphic Design? Mark Howe

We were fortunate to be invited to a visiting professional talk Illustrator and photographer, Mark Howe.  He was initially a Graphic Designer for Iris in Sheffield but has gone on to be a free lance Illustrator and more recently is also a photographer.

I really like the sense of humour in his work and now I have met him I can see this is a natural extension of his personality.






He gave us some excellent advise and tips base on his own experience.  This is a summary

  • Love constructive criticism -  to give your colleagues an opening to provide feedback ask " How could I improve this?" instead of do you like it?
  • Work on your skills not just your ideas
  • Read the text don't just look at the pictures
  • Carry a camera and notepad every where
  • Collect, reference and organise ideas and material
  • Figure out WHY you like things
  • Draw /paint / make things more
  • Widen your input - Don't just look at Graphic design..
  • Improve your presentations skills
He then let us in on his own 'process' when getting briefs.
  • The brief - Understand. listen to client carefully.  Don't give your initial ideas away too soon. Really think about what questions to ask
  • Redefine the brief - Understand what the client REALLY needs
  • Research - write down what you know before you start researching.  You get 'the common' knowledge.
  • Reference/possible directions -  Look at the competition, similar campaigns, similar markets to either discount or try similar.
  • Formulate ideas - Different options
  • Chose the route
  • Test and evaluate
  • Rework/revise
  • Reflect & Learn.
He also gave is some tips on leaving Uni.
  • Get involved -  To stand out get the real live projects in your portfolio
  • Collaborate
  • Get your work online
  • Printed portfolio
  • Talk to people - network
  • Memorable Card/sample to leave behind
  • Ask for placements/projects
  • Keep a log of contacts and dates and replies

What is graphic design?

Graphic Design.... is a solution to a problem of communication through design.




Glorious Creative

The Glorious Creative agency is based in Manchester.  I like the way they really engage with the concept.  In this case the promotional and marketing material for the Associate of Photographers exhibition.  The invitation is a pastiche of a Polaroid film. The catalogue, with a front cover that used heat sensitive inks. This reveals sections of images when handled, was mailed in a bespoke slipcase. An award-winning project.  I also like the honesty of using brown paper and the 'hot up north' metaphor.

Another Glorious Creative project for Manchester Museums and Galleries.




The museums in Manchester wanted to attract a wider national and international audience.  The agency identified one large element of visitors were visiting family and friends.  Their campaign was directed at the many visitors to Manchester using brightly coloured paving graphics to engage.  They quoted facts and stories from Manchester's history to attempt to attract the visitors to the museums.  This is a very simple but effective campaign.

The D&AD website has a wealth of inspiration.  I particularly like this clip which is promoting the BBC Knowledge website in a humorous and engaging way.  "Humans are ace!"

What is graphic design?

I found these in a book, The Power of Paper in Graphic Design Catherine Fishel published by Rockport

The above brochure caught my attention as the opaque orange cover appears to show you everything below however on closer inspection more is revealed on the second page..'More than meets the eye'.  I like clever ideas and design



This is a wedding invitation, I like design which delivers the unexpected...


Again this is a clever idea, a firm trying to spread the message of hope has used the concept of light, sending its clients candles which they can put inside the paper bags.


This is so simple and effective...
